Please Play Again...

Yaaayyy... It's time to play "Rrroll up the rim to lose" at Tim Horton's again - er I mean "Rrroll up the rim to win"... Except most people I've spoken to never seem to win anything... I haven't either, for that matter.

Unless you count all those "Please Play Again" cups... I've won TONS of those. The problem is, none of the Tim Hortons stores are willing to give you a free cup so you can play again when you try to claim the prize. They all have this silly insistence that you actually *PAY* for the new cup with another chance to play. What sort of nonsense is that??

Ok I'm kidding. I don't really believe the crap I just wrote. However... An old housemate from uni came up with the "Rrroll up the rim to lose" name for the contest. (Click HERE to see his blog.) And let's face it, he's right on, you gotta give credit where credit's due. I think the only time I've ever won something was when I FOUND a winning ticket on the sidewalk outside a Tim Horton's, last year. It probably fell out of a garbage bag. (Just imagine - even if it didn't, it was in downtown Toronto so we can only guess the number of shoes that had stepped on this little paper stub by the time I picked it up - YIKES!)

It kinda feels like playing the lottery, really. You get a "chance to win" every time you buy a medium (or bigger) coffee / tea / etc. The odds seem about that good too. (I seem to recall that the odds of winning the lottery are about as good as being struck by lightning twice...) But seeing as how I haven't been struck by lightning once - and I hope I never have to deal with that - somehow I'm skeptical that this contest is a good way to get free stuff. But hey - to all those who are playing in the hopes of winning a plasma TV or a barbecue or an SUV... all the best! :)

As for me? I'll get my occasional (monthly) Timmy's coffee in the hope that maybe, just maybe I'll get a free coffee or donut out of it, not really expecting it - because let's face it, last year I actually bought a coffee every other day (sometimes every day) and didn't win diddly.

Actually, Timmy's has a heck of a marketing campaign to plug this little contest, I have a feeling they make great money while the promo's on. But based on my recent experience in the last few years, I don't think I'm buying the hype this time. They make a decent coffee, they make good donuts, their sandwiches put Subway to shame with the amount of meat they put in them, but somehow I'm just not inspired to "Rrroll up the rim" this time around.

Ah well. (Of course I'd love to hear from people who've actually won stuff - might restore my faith in the whole process...)

*lol* I have won a cookie I think... no wait, it was a tea biscuit. No, that wasn't it. Give me a minute... I'll get it. Oh I dunno... whatever it was, it wasn't considered to be worth hundres or thousands of $$.

Being a former employee of Tim Hortons, I can certainly verify the inrease in business with that promotion - it never fails. What scared me, and still does, is the amount of unrolled cups that make their way to the garbage... not just by customers, but from employees who, say, dropped them on the floor so they can't use them anymore. Think of what potentially just got thrown out!

Oh well, I guess we could always fall back to that clause that "no purchase is necessary"... which on one bothers with.
